A structured reference covering the foundational syllabus of practical aromatherapy, from olfactory physiology to studio practice.
Blending theory
Top, middle, and base notes
Blends are structured around three note classes that differ in how quickly they evaporate and how long they persist.
Top notes
Highly volatile compounds that register first on the nose and evaporate quickly, shaping the opening of a blend.
Middle notes
Moderately volatile compounds that form the body of a blend and bridge the top and base notes.
Base notes
Low-volatility compounds that anchor the blend, slow evaporation of the lighter notes, and extend its lasting character.
Application protocols
Diffusion, dilution, and safe handling
Environmental diffusion should be run in ventilated rooms at measured intervals, with attention to the scent load in the air. Topical use depends on carrier oil dilution ratios, set to suit the method and the person.
Safe handling guidelines apply across all topical and diffusion methods. Review each protocol before practice and record the ratios and durations used in study notes.
